Mongoose Large Bicycle U-Lock

Yes, the price does indicate the quality.
This lock really is as cheap as the price tag. I recently had my bike stolen and this lock put up the fight of a 1 year old with a piece of candy. Examining the lock after discovering the bike was gone it appears that nothing but a simple hammer and a good beating popped the lock loose. the metal U was easily bent and the locking device gave way far too easily. Learn from my mistake and protect your investment with a little more than a cheap $10 lock.On the plus side, the key was easy to use after you fidget with it for 30 seconds. As it's made by a decently known brand too, it would likely deter anyone looking for a quick 5 second getaway. It will now make a pretty good paperweight and a nice story to anyone who drops by my desk so I'll give it 2 stars instead of 1.

adequate lock. good for price.
The key mechanism can be a little finicky/sticky at first, but mine has gotten better over time. It can be a little difficult to get slide both ends into the bar, but not that bad. If you are gentle with it, it works fine. If you are a brute that slams things around, this may not be the lock for you. I like the 'quick release' style lever that tightens the grip of the holder loop and holds the lock in place so that it does not swing around while you are biking (it does not quick release the lock from the holder). You get what you pay for... I am sure that there are better locks out there, but this one works fine, just not as smoothly as some other u-locks I've had.

More than one defect
Awful; I wish I could rate it lower than one star. I knew it wasn't going to be a perfect lock, but it is not even functional. I used this for about a month and a half before I completely gave up on it. I used it often, and it was exposed to the elements, but it was never abused or dropped, or endured anything unusual to perform so poorly.First, the small rubber loop that sticks out close to the keyhole peeled off in less than 30 days, which caused the rubber to slowly start to slide off the opposite end, blocking the holes of the lock to the point where I had to cut through the rubber in order to get the "U" into the lock.Second, the locking mechanism is terrible. It was completely fine when I used it for the first few days, but it progressively got worse. I occasionally had to jimmy the key to get it through all the tumblers at first, and I didn't mind. However, this lock eventually got worse and worse until I frequently had to spend almost 10 minutes to unlock it. After being late to multiple classes because of this lock, I have finally given up.

First and second order both broke
I ordered this though Amazon months ago and when my shipment arrived, the lock did not work. There was something wrong with the locking mechanism inside and it would not open. I repackaged it, mailed it back, and was sent a new lock. I put this on my bike over the winter and today when I went to unlock it, it appeared to have the same issue as the first defective lock- something inside the mechanism would not line up correctly to unlock it. I wiggled it around for about 10 minutes before I was finally able to free my bike, and now I'm not risking putting it back on. This was a waste of money.

Not bad for the price, matching my Mongoose beast fat tire
It is indeed cheap compared to other u-locks with better reviews. I won't be surprised it might be easy to break but honesly I doubt those priced at $30 to $40 would do a better job.It took me several minutes to get used to it though, basically you need to hold the bar steady then turn the key all the way to the right to unlock. After realizing that I have no problem lock and unlock it again and again. It is also a mongoose branded lock which matches my mongoose beast fat tire. I am not too worried about safety as I only ride it during lunch time around company campus and lock it in front of company buildings. I may buy an expensive one with better reviews (those around ~$80 bucks) with free commuter checks.

not secure and not easy to use
I am writing this review 10 days after delivery of my lock. My new bike was stolen last night in a very public area. It was locked through the frame and front wheel with this lock at the time. Before it was stolen I found this lock a challenge to secure and remove the key easily or quickly. I would invest the money in a more secure lick do you aren't out the hundreds of dollars on a bike like I am.

Cheap Product = Cheap Manufacturing
I had gotten this lock because it had good reviews and was relatively cheap. But, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's starting to "break" in the sense the lock isn't working. You can look into the key hole and see that sometimes it's not lined up properly. You have to wiggle your key back and forth a bit before you can actually unlock the U-lock. This has caused me a lot of trouble as my bike is my ride, and if I can't get the U-lock to unlock it'll cause me a lot of problems. I was going to return it, but unfortunately the return policy had just ended... I'm going to see whether there's any warranty (but I can't seem to find any...). If you love/rely on your bike just go for a more expensive lock, this one is no good.

Bargain price, price point
This is exactly what I expected for 9 bucks. I'm sure the name brand models are better, but I'm not willing to pay $30-45 more. It appears to be well made and strong. Now if I had a $1500 bike I would use more than this lock, then again, you shouldn't leave that type of bike outside, tempting would be thieves. Don't forget to use bicycle chain lube, or something similar in the lock mechanism, it works much better.
