Hillman122062 Galvanized Solid Wire 9 Gauge, 50 Foot Coil

Q: I was trying to look up the diameter and I found there are 4 different wire gauge standards in the US. Which is this?

Hi Patricia, I just tried to measure this 9 guage wire. To the best of my ability, I measured it at 5/32 inches or 4 mm in diameter. (It's just a little smaller than 3/16 inches.)

Q: Is this rigid enough to pound a 12" piece into the ground. I want to make some ground staples with it.

I've been cutting this in 12" lengths and folding it over a short piece of 3/4 inch PVC to make staples for landscape irrigation. It works great, is 60% cheaper than buying factory made staples, and can be driven into the ground quite easily with a rubber mallet.

Q: Will this wire rust or show oxidation when used outside?

Once the zinc is eroded away it will rust. Zinc is what makes the metal galvanized and is a sacrificial anoid in the steel. Meaning the zinc will rust first then the metal. It’ll take years. But it will show rust spots eventually.
