He's football crazy, he's football mad...
Brentford are going to win the Cup! No matter that they've not won a game all season; that their manager - the one and only Jim Pooley - until recently considered gambling (sorry, entrepreneurship) his vocation; or the hoards of evil beasties intent on stopping Jim and his bestest friend (John Omally, of course) from leading the way on a legendary FA Cup run.Rankin is at his hilariously inventive best here, but don't be fooled into thinking this book has ANYTHING to do with football (well, anything more than your average England footballer's hastily ghosted autobiography, at least). This is the seventh book in the (now legendary) Brentford Trilogy, and it's really rather good.

Great author.
Bought as a Christmas present for my partner. He’s read other books by the author, Robert Rankin.

Takes a while to get into it, then great
It takes a while to set-up the pre-amble -as Rankin always does, then the book explores multiple threads at the same time, drawing to the Rankin-esk style of high activity conclusion -followed by calm.He always adds a post-apocalypse period of explanation. Not a killer book, but light and fun to read.

I love this plot, and look forward to it again
Fans of the Trilogy will enjoy this seventh manifestation of The Plot. Just as with our pair of comfy slippers, we can slide in to the mad world of Mr Rankin. We discover a little more about the infeasibly aged Professor, gain a little more respect for our heroes, and can laugh at the inevitable disasters that befall our familiar characters. For me, this book worked as well as the originals. Robert Rankin usually manages to have a page where he writes something so bizarre that you just have to stop and laugh uncontrollably in a public place - don't do as I did and read it on a trans-Atlantic flight! So, regulars will know the plot, the characters and even the plot devices, but it's the way he tells it.

A welcome return
A pretty decent and amusing book. Not as good as the original trilogy but any of his Brentford books are great.A bit unrealistic though. I can take the tall tales, magical events and unlikely inventions but Brentford in the FA cup final?
