The Way of a Pilgrim and the Pilgrim Continues His Way

Wonderful book
For those on the spiritual path, this book is extremely inspiring, one man’s lifelong walking pilgrimage through Russia and Siberia, with only the clothes on his back, and the drive to strip away everything that is not prayer and faith in God. Amazing.

5 Stars for the Book, 1 star for incorrect edition sent.
The books is a classic, obviously five stars. Amazon seller sent me the wrong edition in worse condition than listed. If you’re looking for a fascinating primer to eastern Christian spiritual practice this is a compelling and easy read. If you’re interested in follow up, I recommend the Beginners Introduction to the Philokalia, followed by Volume 1 of the Philokalia. Wilderness Journal by Angela Doll Carlson is a popular level devotional that follows volume 1 for a full calendar year as well, geared towards beginners to the tradition. I have gone on to read and study all the volumes of the Philokalia and it’s changing my life in major ways. Very enlightening and transformative stuff, revealing a depth of devotion, spiritual depth, holiness and faith that we all would benefit from seeing and learning from.

Learning from the Pilgrim about the Jesus Prayer
Finally, a book that made sense to me. Right from the beginning I saw myself in the Pilgrim. "That's me!" I immediately said to myself. "On the 24th Sunday after Pentecost I went to church to say my prayers there during the Liturgy. The First Epistle of St. Paul to the Thessalonians was being read and among other words I heard these--'Pray without ceasing.' "It was this text, more than any other, which forced itself upon my mind and I began to think how it was possible to pray without ceasing, since people need to concern themselves with other things also in order to make a living. . . . "What ought I to do?" I thought. "Where shall I find someone to explain it to me?"I continue searching for a spiritual advisor, a person who is deeply spiritual, and not just on the surface, as the ones I meet seem to be. *sigh*This book touched me more than the hundreds (literally) of books I've read in search of a clear explanation on prayer and the way to live a Jesus-centered life. I wish I had found this book years ago. Oh, and the biggest thing from this book--The Jesus Prayer. In all the books I've read, why have I never heard of this prayer? This is a huge revelation for me. I now say this prayer throughout the day, every day.I love this Pilgrim, who has taught me so much in a kind and loving manner, but I still need that spiritual advisor, and will continue my search.

More Relevant Than Ever!
I am still in the process of reading this book. I can see why this is considered a "classic" and would recommend it to anyone interested in deepening their spiritual walk with the practice of "unceasing prayer".A portion from "The Pilgrim Continues His Way" ---"It brings the mind and the heart into a proper state from time to time........for if he uninterruptedly, at all times, and in all circumstances, offers the prayer, calling in secret upon the most holy name of Jesus.....then he will have no time for vain conversation, for judging his neighbors, for useless waste of time in sinful pleasures of the senses. Every evil thought of his would meet opposition to its growth. Every sinful act he contemplated would not come to fruition so readily as with an empty mind. Much talking and vain talking would be checked or entirely done away with, and every fault at once cleansed from the soul by the gracious power of so frequently calling upon the divine name. The frequent exercise of prayer would often recall the soul from sinful action and summon it to what is the essential exercise of it's skill, to union with God." (pg. 169-170)I am awed by how timeless the advice is that the "pilgrim" has collected in this little book. If you, too, are seeking the path to holiness the "Way of the Pilgrim" could be the way for you too!

Good book, a bit skeptical of translation... but really worth the read!
Just began reading this book, and am finding it a good read! One cannot help but be impressed with the Author's (19th Century) sincere seeking and searching of what he believes was spoken to him from the Scripture. His pursuit is an excellent example for us, as Western Christians. We often do not follow with such persistence, enlightenment concerning areas of our faith, as we pursue our apprenticeship in Jesus! The translation is not consistently good; there exists several terminology/translation issues that clearly can be traced back to Western Catholic concepts. 'The pilgrim is said to be encouraged to use' for example, a 'rosary'(page 12 of the 1993, Hope Publishing, edition by R.M. French), but this is almost surely a prayer rope or chotki (Russian: чётки, chotki). The prayer rope is part of the habit of Russian Orthodox monks and nuns and is employed by monastics (and sometimes by others) to count the number of times one has prayed the Jesus Prayer or, occasionally, other prayers. One might say this is a small thing, but since the writer of this book did not even know the word "rosary" it seems important to me to keep true to this 'Anonymous Writer’s’ words and ideas. Here it is not overly critical, but it would be wise for the reader to consider where else liberty might have been taken by the translator... as one reads, consider the context and time of the writer’s original experience and notes.

Pray without ceasing
The main character, the unnamed Pilgrim, will make you feel very humble and be inspired to live a simpler way of life, one focused on the spiritual rather than the material. You don't need to be Christian to read this.

Fantastic book on personal spirituality.
The best book on personal Orthodox spirituality. It may lead some to think that you can do it all by yourself, but don't. We all need the support of the Holy Church.

It's definitely a great buy.
An ideal book for someone who is tired of conventional religion and wants to be able to pray spontaneously. The packaging and delivery live up to the Amazon standards. It's definitely a great buy.
