The Plant Plus Diet Solution: Personalized Nutrition for Life

I really enjoyed reading this book
First of all I just want to say I loved this book. I read many health/food books. I read blogs and watch docu-series and you should see how exited I get when a new documentary comes across my Netfix feed. The 'not so nice' trend in all of this is that everyone is trying to make a buck off of our health woes. See a good recipe for healthy GF Sweet Potato Brownies that you'd love to try? Well if your down for reading a few pages of witty, personal thoughts and musing of the blogger/pastry chef then you're gonna love this trend. Or you could just scroll down to the recipe and the disclaimer that says blogger does receive compensation for the products listed there in. Love a really informative docu-series? I've gotten on the mailing list for several...that I have watched and loved... only to be heavily marketed for purchasing the series. And your favorite Dr. blogger is selling...well, everything! I know all of these people need to make money..I'm actually jealous that I am not doing the same thing and I buy supplements from my favorite Dr. blogger but reading this book was like great big fat break from all of the marketing. Much of what she wrote I had read before but her style of writing is personal with a touch of humor that makes it a good read. The information is relatively simple, not overly dogmatic with cited studies and articles as back ups. In all instances Dr. Borysenko is open about any affiliations with products that she might have...and there was only one that she had any monetary connection to. What I liked most is that compared to most eating plans out there e.g., Paleo, Vegan, and Keto, this one is relatively balanced. To a SAD eater it will feel extreme but If you have been making changes toward a healthier diet this won’t be a huge leap to implement. The only thing I didn't like was the 'ok, were going to get to the practical application of all of this but first you need to read this...' Or 'are you ready for the recipes? Well, first you have to read that...' lead ins to each chapter. Had she been trying to sell something through the book I would have seen it as a marketing ploy..which probably would not have crossed my mind had I not been subjected to it a million times on the web. And lastly the lead up to the recipes or lack there of might have been a huge let down to people thinking this was a recipe book. It mostly isn't but the ones included are a nice spring board into a new way of eating and just might give you incentive to search out recipes and recipe books that harmonize with your new health goals. If you don't mind reading or scrolling through a blog or two or a thousand, check out all of the free recipes online. Enjoy!

Empowerment to Be Your Own Diet Guru
A compendium of relevant and accessible food science and health psychology combined with practical tips and recipes makes this an exceptional resource in the self-help diet book genre. The personalized nutrition guidelines Dr. Joan presents aren't for those seeking a quick or easy solution to weight or health issues. But that is exactly what makes it a valuable resource for those seeking a long-term, sustainable, enjoyable and life-giving way to eat! Unlike most diet books, The PlantPlus Diet Solution doesn't tell you what to eat, but offers facts, guidelines and resources for listening to the wisdom of your own body and becoming your own expert as to what will best serve your overall health and well-being.I've learned through twenty-five years of psychotherapy and health coaching with clients struggling with food and weight that, as Dr. Joan demonstrates through research and examples from her own personalized nutrition experiments, "there is no one-size-fits-all diet." The key to finding the "right" diet is through paying attention to the impact different foods have on our physical and mental health. Joan does an exquisite job providing simple tools that empower readers to become experts about what best serves our own unique biological blueprint for optimal energy efficiency.I especially appreciated her clear explanation about the role insulin efficiency plays in metabolism of carbohydrates--and some people's remarkable capacity to store excess calories as fat. She identifies three types of bodies: 1.) insulin efficient people who can eat all the carbohydrates they want and never experience negative weight or health consequences; 2.) insulin resistant people (diabetic/pre-diabetic) whose bodies react negatively to diets high in carbohydrates; 3.) and the rest who fall somewhere in-between. Her capacity to simplify the complex makes this a great resource for folks who want to understand how their bodies work but aren't interested in detailed explanations.Knowledge is power. Dr. Joan provides information to help readers make informed choices about nutrition as well as tools to increase self-knowledge. Best of all, she does so with authenticity and wisdom born from several years of "diet sleuthing" as she looked for solutions to her own nutrition related health challenges. Her personal examples, humor and lighthearted way of writing makes the science digestible for those of us who haven't taken a hard science course since high school!

A true masterpiece for 21st century health
This magnificent book presents the latest information on individualized nutrition in a readable format. Omnivores, vegans, and those avoiding gluten or GMOs will find what they need to guide their food choices. Dr. J's research is state-of-the-art and addresses what we know about human physiology and well-being in the 21st century. This delightful book clearly describes how we use sugars, fats, and other nutrients and trace elements. Dr. J is a master teacher and provides enough information so both those trained in science and those new to it will have clear, available information or further citations to learn exactly what they need to know. This is one of those rare go-to books that I know I will consult frequently. Dr. J clearly cares about her readers and shares the fruits of her many years of interacting with other experts in ways that are immediately useful. The recipes are fresh and new and she also provides many tips for those with allergies or metabolic disorders. She includes her own recipes as well as those of chefs and experienced cooks. I personally loved the fact that she acknowledges her sources so respectfully, and points to other sources that augment what she presents here.I have already implemented some of her hints, and believe this book will be useful for years to come. I highly recommend it.

A common sense diet
I finally found a diet book that uses my own ideas!Lots of healthy fruit and veg. Nuts and seeds. Healthy oils. Nothing white or starchy. Plus a LITTLE meat/fish/poultry/egg/dairy on the side. Great recipes too!

Déçue
Rien de bien nouveau comparé à tous les conseils alimentaires du moment. Je m'attendais à des conseils qui collent plus à la vie quotidienne de chacun de nous (travail, famille etc.).

Interesting but a bit perplexing
I found most of the information in the book very interesting, but some points were somewhat confusing. So I left Dr. Borysenko some questions on her blog as well as on her FB page asking for clarification, however, I haven't heard back yet.I did not give it 5 stars because I found the recipes rather uninteresting for someone who, like me, has always done a lot of cooking from scratch.
