Good package, decent sound
I have many different field recording devices for nature recordings and primarily use this with Binaural in-ear mics as it's a nice and compact size.First of all, the F1 has similar preamps to the H range and so will introduce noticeable self noise with quiet recordings, so if you don't want noise in quiet recordings then you'll need to look at the Zoom F3 at a minimum. That said, I've noticed the self noise in this device to be slightly less than the H range at a gain of MID or 8 with the MS mic so it's manageable with some delicate noise reduction using noise profiles recorded at various gain stages. If you want to mount the device to a tripod you'll need to spend another £30 to get a shock mount as there is no 1/4" thread so bare that in mind.Menu navigation is straightforward like on all Zoom devices and overall it's a pretty nice and neat little package. The SD card slot is a bit fiddly as is the battery compartment but that's the only minor niggle I have.If you decide to get the XLR adapter just keep in mind you obviously won't be able to use 48v phantom power, though using dynamic mics will be fine.

Works great for video production with some caveats.
I use this on the auto-levels setting for video production as a backup mic to my rifle mic and it has never let me down over the past year +. Quality is great and it just works very well. The battery compartment has a tendency to pop open though - fixed with some camera tape and it's a bit too easy to put the microphone into the headphone jack but minor issues which would be great to see solved in the V2.0.Going to buy a second to add to my kit. Much prefer this design to the Rode Wireless Go, even without the ability to live monitor. There is, honestly a place for both I think.

Good prosumer recorder.
Not on a par with SD recorders of course but then you wouldn't expect it to be but it is still a very good sound recorder particularly for hobbyists and Youtube videographers. It is slowly coming down in price and puts it at the top of Zoom audio recorders.

pink noise on line out to A7iii
A field recorder should be able to connect to any modern camera natively. All the other Zoom field recorders can. Quick resolution to use headphone out, but that's not the best answer for many reasons. I noted on forums this problem was not isolated to my unit and indeed a design failure.I asked the market place seller if they or Zoom had a solution, for example I might have accepted an attenuator cable, but with no reply simply returned the unit and bought an alternative brand. The menu's all there, but using it and managing the settings has to be learned owning to a clunky UX that belongs to a decade or two back. I didn't investigate the add on Bluetooth dongle fully but believe that only manages levels, rather than all the settings. <- this could change and drastically improve the product.Despite my gripes, if you don't intend to use the line out. I liked the non-traditional size format. The screen is great, and if your application and microphone/inputs used will remain the same, (so set up once and little menu fiddling later) an excellent bit of kit.
