Great Movie 4k or standard Blu-ray are both good choices
This is a review of the 4k Blu-ray with a very good DTS-X soundtrack. The movie is one of the more enjoyable animated films to come out over the past few years. While it is a kids movie there is definitely enough here for adults to enjoy this film. I was very concerned when previews first came out that the minions would drag the movie down. I was never so happy to be wrong. The minions add great comic relief to the movie and Steve Carell does a fantastic job as Gru with help from Russell Brand (Dr Nefario) and Jason Segel (Vector). All three roles are played perfectly as to not go over the top with their performances. The 3 girls do a great job of giving real emotion where it's needed most and keep the movie from becoming too silly. The Video - the upgrade from Blu-ray to 4k is most noticeable in the use of HDR providing a deeper and stronger colors palate. There is not a lot of texture that can be improved upon. There are a few scenes where details are a little sharper such as the opening sequence in Egypt but it's not a huge improvement that Blu-ray viewers would feel like they are missing out.The audio is a good improvement on an already good mix. The DTS-X soundtrack makes good use of overhead speakers and does a good job of making the entire movie just feel fuller.IMHO If you own the Blu-ray version you only need to upgrade if you are a big fan of the movie. I'm happy with the 4k but even happier that I got it on sale.

Great version of a fun movie!
TL;DR: the 4K version is so much better than the Blu-ray. It's worth buying twice! The picture quality is noticeably more detailed and colorful. The audio & video show off your system. It's definitely worth paying extra. The movie is fun, well-produced, and has so many details that I still enjoy watching it, after all these years! The other two movies aren't good enough to justify buying the collection with the other movies, IMO. You may appreciate having the variety of the other movies though.Anyway, while this story is partly about three little girls, even boys will enjoy the action sequences and the villains. A few scenes may be a bit scary for the little ones, so use your best judgement there. Some people may not appreciate the sarcasm from the girls and attitude of "the bad guys". It makes the characters more real and the movie more fun, too.My senior parents and adult brothers enjoyed it. It has heart, showing family issues, without being overbearing.Highly recommended.

A movie with laughs and heart!
It's kind of a bizarre experience to relate to cartoon characters and feel the human emotions they emote about their story. Pixar has made a few films that tug at your heartstrings (UP in particular). I was very pleased to watch this film with my son and connect with these odd characters surrounded by 3 adorable orphan girls. It was a very funny movie with a somewhat-typical ending of the hard-hearted villian finding love and acceptance. (This reminded me of the Grinch movies). Just because we recognize the theme from other films doesn't take away from this fun telling of this familiar story. I'm very glad that I made this purchase and that it now belongs in my movie collection! Recommended for the whole family!

Great movie, but DVD I received doesnt always play
Movie is great , all ages love, but my DVD stopped working on one player, says disk cant be read (other disks still work) but this one works fine on another player in the kids room so I wound up keeping instead of dealing with returning. Would be nice to play on all my players.

One of the best movies, made even better!
Truly a great film. I believe this will go down in our history as one of the greatest animated films ever. The story is heartfelt and relatable to nearly everyone. The cast is fantastic. It is absolutely hilarious. You can watch it so many times and always see something different (focusing solely on one of the girls each time you watch it is a great example). And it spawned the minions! All that, on top of wonderful 4k quality is just amazing, and absolutely worth it.

Hilarious and touching without being maudlin
loved Despicable Me in the theater and rented it a couple of times when it came out on DVD. I bought it on Blu-Ray because it was a better bargain than DVD- the Blu-Ray included more features (including 3 shorts featuring the minions- can't go wrong there) for just a little more than the DVD, not because I thought it would be significantly better in Blu-Ray. It's a cartoon, right? I was so pleased with the improved quality of the film I will purchase animated films in Blu-Ray always now. It really improved the viewing experience, and I loved the movie already.
